QUB team win student charette at World Architecture Festival

11/12/2024

Congratulations to the team of students from Queen’s University Belfast Architecture, who were recently crowned winners of the 2024 Student Charette prize at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore for their project Staging Symbiosis: Seaweed+. Oilean Galligan, a member of the winning team sits on RSUA Council as the Student Representative for Queen’s University.

This project, proposed for Rathlin Island, provides a conceptual future for the island, and includes extensive use of seaweed (one of the islands most important and abundant natural resources), with the building’s final structure a mixture of timber frame construction and load-bearing, double leaf ‘kelpcrete’.

The project was cited as being ‘well considered, and completed… contextual, with a strong identity and materiality, and well resolved.’
