22 October 2024

Shane O’Toole was awarded RSUA Honorary Membership at RSUA’s annual Architecture Night, which was held at the Ewart building on Friday 18 October 2024.

After graduating in Architecture from University College Dublin in 1979, Shane O’Toole led a research group at UCD from 1986 to 1991. During that time, he co-founded the famous Group 91 Architects, which led the infrastructure plan for the regeneration of the central Dublin district of Temple Bar. Shane is founder of DoCoMoMo Ireland, which is dedicated to documenting and conserving buildings, sites, and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement.

Shane was Ireland’s commissioner for the Venice Biennale in 2004 and 2006, and for many years he has been an international expert for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.

Shane is well known to many for his numerous columns and articles, including his regular contributions to The Sunday Times, which have informed and inspired readers to debate, appreciate and undoubtedly also commission architecture. North by North West, the 2008 book on the renowned Liam McCormick, which is on many RSUA member’s bookshelves, is the outcome of a collaboration between Shane O’Toole and Honorary RSUA member Dr Paul Larmour.

Shane O’Toole has found his particular place to advocate for architects and architecture. His activism and guiding hand have encouraged many Irish architects to come to international prominence.

Alan Jones welcomed Shane O’Toole to the stage and RSUA President John Lavery presented Shane with his Honorary Membership.
