RSUA has expressed broad support for a set of proposed reforms published by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) intended to simplify how people join or return to the UK Register of Architects.
These proposals were subject to a public consultation that closed on 2 February 2026. The consultation set out details of three new routes forming a new Registration Assurance Process, which would replace the current assessment systems.
Route R: Re-Entry or delayed entry to the Register for qualified architects
RSUA agrees with ARB on the importance of ensuring that professionals who left the Register or completed their final qualification more than two years ago are ready and competent to practise from day one.
We consider it reasonable for ARB to require a CV and a written reference from a registered architect confirming at least two consecutive years of relevant architectural work or, where this is not available, a personal statement identifying gaps in readiness to practise and how these will be addressed.
Route P: Partially qualified professionals
RSUA particularly welcomes ARB’s proposal to create a route for applicants who hold partial qualifications, specifically ARB-accredited Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications but no ARB-accredited Part 1, typically because they hold an international qualification in place of Part 1.
Northern Ireland may stand to benefit particularly from Route P, as it could enable more students holding a Part 1-equivalent qualification from the Republic of Ireland to practise across the border with greater ease.
Route C: Architects removed from the Register for CPD non-compliance
RSUA is broadly content with ARB’s proposal that architects who do not comply with its CPD scheme, and are therefore removed from the Register, will be required to prepare a Personal Development Plan setting out the CPD topics they intend to address over the following 12 months.
RSUA asked for clarification from ARB on what the consequences of a returning architect not meeting their CPD obligations in this scenario would be.
