ARB Prescribed Exam: RSUA seeks consistent standards for students progressing to Part 3

RSUA has lodged a broadly supportive response to a public consultation issued by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) on proposed changes to its Prescribed Examination, the route to registration for applicants who do not hold ARB-prescribed qualifications but can demonstrate they have achieved equivalent academic competence.

Eligibility requirements

Under the proposed changes, to be eligible to sit the Prescribed Examination applicants must demonstrate either:

a) successful completion of qualifications at Level 7 (RQF) (Master’s degree level) in architecture or a relevant discipline; or

b) substantial professional experience demonstrating engagement with architectural practice or the design and procurement of the built environment.

Accounting for route b) in particular, RSUA stressed that the Examination must be sufficiently robust without creating a situation in which applicants can simply learn how to pass the test without properly demonstrating the required knowledge, competencies and skills.

We stated our position that all applicants progressing to Part 3 should be required to demonstrate these abilities at Level 7 in architecture or a relevant discipline, regardless of the route through which they have been acquired.

Examination format

RSUA is content with the proposed examination format. However, we raised concern that conducting the interview component online may increase the risk that applicants receive assistance from AI or other external sources during the assessment.
