The RSUA recently submitted its response to the ARB Call for Evidence on the issue of professional, practical experience.
The experience for a student on the journey to become an architect can be frustrating and challenging, while there is also a greater need to understand the demands and expectations from the employer side. We contend that the professional experience which is offered to local students is of a largely high-quality standard and encourages students to experience all sides of a business.
Members have highlighted the RSUA Professional Insights Programme (PIP) as being one they have enjoyed participating in and found extremely beneficial, to both architect and student. It is increasingly recognised as a model which deserves support and if the next generation of architects is to be encouraged it is through programmes such as PIP that they will emerge.
Consideration should also be given towards the length of time it takes to become a fully qualified architect. The lengthy period of study, especially considering rising student fees, will be off-putting to some and while there is no suggestion that the quality of learning should be diluted, consideration should be given to examining how the timeframe for academic study can be more efficiently packaged and a greater emphasis be given to the practical experience element.
Despite the advent of new technologies in the sector there is no substitute for human experience and interaction. There are a number of ways which the industry, working collaboratively, can help support students, for example consideration should be given towards the development of a standardised form of ‘training contract’. Some have suggested that employers should undergo qualifications to act as mentors, although there is a concern that this could dissuade some from participating.
This is a very important issue for members, and we have proposed further engagement with ARB on this issue, with a particular focus on understanding member views and proposals. We will continue to keep members informed about this process and any further opportunities to contribute. Find the full response from the RSUA here.
