The RSUA Education and Careers Committee met today in the RSUA office.
The Committee discussed the contents of the Work Experience guide for pupils and practices prepared by John Mullan using resources from RIAI and RIBA. It was agreed that this guide should be sent to all members. Members will be asked to register as ‘a willing practice’ to take on work experience pupils.
Also agreed was a call out for new Committee members, to be issued later in the year.
Committee Chair, Jennifer Harper shared with the Committee that she is meeting with Ulster Journals to organise an article on the Professional Insights Programme. This will be included in Perspective Magazine and students from both Queen’s University and Ulster University will be invited to contribute.
Jenny Russell, RIBA’s Director of Education and Learning and RSUA Director Ciarán Fox will meet to review Jenny’s paper aimed at highlighting the underfunding of architecture courses. This paper will inform the RSUA’s own paper on the topic.
The Committee reviewed the headline purpose document and agreed that it still reflects the Committee’s aims. These purposes can be viewed here.
From this discussion, it was decided that the Committee’s focus on research should be renewed. Key researchers at both Queen’s University and Ulster University will be identified to collaborate on this.
Ciarán Fox also provided the Committee with an update on the early stages of an apprenticeship model being developed with Queen’s University. This model will provide 10 apprenticeships to undergraduates, with an initial intake planned for 2025.
The Education and Careers Committee will next meet online on 13 November 2024.
