The meeting with the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) attended by Frank Turvey, RIAI Registrar of Architects, and Sandra Campbell, RIAI Education Director, was very reassuring for architects in Northern Ireland who are interested in registering and working in the Republic of Ireland.
For Irish citizens, thus including everyone born in Northern Ireland who chooses to claim their legal right to Irish citizenship, the process for registration with RIAI will be the same as present, even in a no-deal scenario.
For British citizens the process will be almost identical to the current process.
The Architects Registration Board (ARB) has confirmed that they will continue to issue EU certificates after Brexit. This certificate is a necessary as part of the application process for RIAI registration.
Regarding the application for an EU certificate ARB, following a request from RSUA, has now agreed to change their processes to only require university certificates to be provided to them if they do not hold a copy on file already.
RIAI also confirmed that anyone who started an architecture degree before the referendum will be have their qualifications recognised in the normal way as they had a legitimate expectation that they this would be the case. For anyone who started their degree after that date the expectation is that an agreement will be reached in the coming years.
