Plan set out to ease consequences of soaring material costs

03/08/21

The Department of Finance has announced steps to help government contractors deal with the rising costs of raw materials.

The pandemic has had an impact on global supply chains, leading to surging prices for products like timber and steel.

Finance Minister Conor Murphy said: “Government contractors are experiencing escalating costs and delays in getting materials which they could not have foreseen when they tendered for government work. I have listened to the concerns of the construction industry and want to do everything in my power to ensure there is no risk to the completion of important projects.”

The Executive has agreed a Construction Material Costs during Pandemic Recovery Procurement Advisory Note, which includes provision for delays in supplies and mechanisms to make allowances for inflationary prices.

The Construction Employers Federation is in discussion with the Department about the practical application of the Note, which is a temporary measure and will be reviewed at the end of September.
