Meeting with Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on Impact of Brexit

Monday 4th July

Ciarán Fox, Director of RSUA, met today with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to discuss the outcome of the EU referendum and its impact on the construction industry. Ciarán was representing the Northern Ireland Construction Group which brings together all of the major trade and professional bodies from the local construction sector to address issues of strategic importance toNorthern Ireland. The other bodies represented at the meeting were CBI, FSB and NIIRTA.

On behalf of the construction sector Ciarán stressed that a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would be unworkable and sought a commitment that the UK government would replace the EU funding which has been critically important in the delivery of many construction projects in Northern Ireland.

Ciarán highlighted the likelihood that Brexit would have a more detrimental impact on the economy in Northern Ireland than on any other part of the UK and asked that the Secretary of State press for additional assistance for Northern Ireland should such a scenario prevail.

The NI Construction Group will continue to engage with the Northern Ireland office on these issues.
