Kevin McCloud becomes RSUA’s newest Honorary Member
Kevin McCloud MBE, broadcaster and designer, was made an honorary member of the RSUA at Architecture Night in Belfast on 21st October 2016. Receiving the accolade for his contribution to the promotion of architecture inNorthern Ireland he said, “I am very privileged to be honoured in this way by the RSUA, having long admired the output that comes from architects inNorthern Ireland every year. It’s clear to see that the province really punches above its weight in terms of architecture, and that the profession is richly talented here.
“I am also encouraged by RSUA initiatives such as Architecture Night, to highlight the important contribution that architecture makes to culture, heritage, tourism, the economy and wider society inNorthern Ireland.”
Kevin is best known for his work on the Channel 4 series Grand Designs, which he has presented since its debut in April 1999. After graduating, Kevin trained and worked as a theatre designer, then set up his own lighting design practice before starting his career in television. In 2005 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Design from both Oxford Brookes and Plymouth University. He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects a year later. In 2007 Kevin created a housing development company, HAB Housing Limited (Happiness, Architecture, Beauty) to challenge the way identikit volume housing was built in the UK. Through his various programmes and particularly through ‘House of the Year 2015’ Kevin has raised the profile and standing of Northern Irish architecture across the UK and Ireland.
