Have Your Say: DfI Living With Water in Derry/Londonderry Draft Plan

18/03/2025

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is currently seeking feedback on its Living With Water in Derry/Londonderry Draft Plan.

The Plan aims to address flood risk management, wastewater treatment, and urban drainage challenges, both now and in the future.

Key areas of consultation include:

Flood Risk Management:

  • Assessing current flood risks, including surface water flooding and climate change impacts.
  • Proposals for flood risk reduction measures, such as sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), flood storage areas, and improving existing drainage networks.

Wastewater Treatment and Sewerage Upgrades:

  • Upgrades to wastewater treatment and sewerage infrastructure to accommodate population growth and higher environmental standards.
  • Measures to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and manage wastewater more efficiently during heavy rainfall.

Sustainable Water Management and Environmental Protection:

  • Strategies for improving water quality and managing stormwater to minimise impacts on local rivers, streams, and coastlines.
  • Proposals to integrate green infrastructure like permeable surfaces, wetlands, and natural flood management systems alongside traditional engineering methods.

Support for Growth and Urban Development:

  • Recommendations for infrastructure improvements that support housing, commercial spaces, and transport projects.
  • Long-term planning to ensure water management systems can accommodate future growth without harming environmental and community outcomes.
