Have your say: DfI consultation on The Transport Strategy 2035

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) last month opened a public consultation on its draft of The Transport Strategy 2035, which aims to outline a refreshed vision and strategic direction for Northern Ireland’s transport system over the next decade.

Strategic priorities and associated measures

The strategy adopts an approach centred on four strategic priorities:

  1. Is Resilient and Sustainable
  2. Supports Connected and Inclusive Communities
  3. Is Safe and Healthy
  4. Supports Green Growth

Each priority is backed by a range of measures that address the full spectrum of transport planning, infrastructure development and service delivery.

Among the proposed measures are:

Resilient and Sustainable

  • A “Vision and Validate” approach in the planning and development of the transport system
  • A programme of road space reallocation for sustainable travel modes
  • A climate and environmental framework for infrastructure projects

Connected and Inclusive Communities

  • Interchange facilities and/or Mobility Hubs for better integration of services and infrastructure
  • Increased investment in Active Travel
  • Feasibility studies focusing on modal shift, regeneration, investment and sustainable development

Safe and Healthy

  • Preparation and implementation of Air Quality Action Plans and the Clean Air Strategy for Northern Ireland

Supports Green Growth

  • Exploration of technology’s role in enhancing the efficiency, safety and sustainability of the transport system

Funding

While the draft strategy outlines potential funding mechanisms, specific monetary figures for new Northern Irish transport projects are not yet detailed in the consultation document. These are expected to be clarified in a final delivery and monitoring plan.

The deadline for responses is 5pm on Tuesday 16 September 2025.
