Have your say: Closure and repurposing of Limavady Courthouse

The Department of Justice is consulting on proposals for the permanent closure and repurposing of Limavady Courthouse.

Court business previously heard in Limavady has been transferred to Coleraine since 2020 and would continue there if the proposal proceeds.

The building

Built in 1914–15, Limavady Courthouse is a distinctive civic building on Main Street. Although not listed, it is recognised for its architectural and historic interest, including its tower, steeply pitched roof and decorative stone detailing. The courthouse remains an important feature of Limavady’s historic townscape.

Reasons for closure

The Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service (NICTS) considers the building unsuitable for modern court use due to accessibility, security and operational limitations.

It also requires significant investment and previously handled the lowest volume of court business in Northern Ireland before its closure in 2020.

Future use and next steps

If approved, the courthouse would be declared surplus and disposed of through public-sector disposal processes, potentially including community asset transfer.

The consultation seeks ideas for future uses that could bring the building back into active use and help secure its long-term future.
