The Executive Office has launched a public consultation on a proposed Artificial Intelligence Strategy for Northern Ireland, setting out potential uses of AI across the economy and public services, alongside considerations around skills, infrastructure and regulation.
While the strategy has a much wider focus, some proposals have potential relevance to the built environment.
AI and infrastructure
The draft report identifies potential applications for AI in infrastructure, including predicting road congestion, optimising traffic signals and detecting safety breaches.
For wastewater infrastructure, potential applications include detecting abnormal flows, identifying contamination and reducing spillovers.
AI in housing
The report identifies “AI in housing” as a potential application, specifically citing “improved property management & tenant services”.
More broadly, the strategy considers how AI could support public sector transformation through automation, data analysis and evidence-based decision-making.
Data centres
The report considers the potential for Northern Ireland to develop a “strategic, whole system plan for a green data centre industry”, while recognising the demands this could place on energy infrastructure.
It notes that Northern Ireland currently has nine data centres, relatively few compared to the Republic of Ireland’s 135, and suggests that future development should be considered alongside wider strategic energy requirements.
