Have your say: ARB consults on new routes for registration

The Architects Registration Board (ARB) is currently consulting on a set of proposed reforms intended to simplify how people join or return to the UK Register of Architects. The aim is to simplify the process while continuing to protect professional standards.

At the centre of the proposals is a new Registration Assurance Process (RAP) that would replace the current assessment systems. It is intended to provide a more consistent approach to assessing applicants in a range of circumstances.

The consultation will close for responses on Monday 2 February 2026.

What’s being consulted?

The consultation asks for views on the introduction of the RAP along with the detail of three new routes that comprise it.

Route R – Re-entry or delayed entry for qualified architects

Applicants who have been off the Register for more than two years, or whose Part 3 qualification is more than two years old, would need to demonstrate readiness to practise. Evidence could include:

  • A CV showing relevant work in the architecture sector for at least two continuous years.
  • A reference from a registered architect confirming this experience.
  • If a CV or reference is unavailable, a personal statement identifying any gaps in knowledge and explaining how these have been addressed through CPD.

Route P – Temporary route for partially qualified professionals

This temporary route is for applicants with accredited Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications but no accredited Part 1. Requirements include:

  • A CV showing at least two years of relevant work in the architecture sector.
  • A reference from a registered architect confirming this experience.

Applicants would not need to take the Part 1 Prescribed Exam.

Route C – Architects removed for CPD non-compliance

Applicants removed from the Register for failing to meet CPD requirements would need to:

  • Create a Personal Development Plan (PDP) setting out the CPD they plan to complete over the next 12 months.
  • Have the PDP reviewed by ARB staff on submission and again at the next renewal point.
