The innovation of generative design could transform the architecture industry, but what does it look like in practice?
Generative design is an advanced, algorithm-driven process, sometimes enabled by AI, used to explore a wide array of design possibilities that meet predefined criteria set by designers or engineers. It is often applied to architecture and construction most often to promote sustainable, space-optimised designs.
RSUA organised this online seminar with Peter Monaghan from Southern Regional College, Martin Hare, Managing Director at McAdam Design and Chris Watson, Project Architect and BIM Manager at McAdam Design. The sessions covered a case study of generative design in use through the SRC Innovation Centre project in Newry.
From the early concept design stage, McAdam Design used innovative tools to generate design solutions to assess their impact on energy use, cost and visual impact. Building Information Modelling (BIM) was used to create 3D versions of the design that the client was able to walk-through in a virtual reality experience. The project was also innovative in its management of information through the creation of an industry leading Project
Dashboard which monitored the scope of works, design, validation of information and overall project progress.
Attendees gained an understanding of the following:
