Death of RSUA Past President Billy McAlister

Professor Billy McAlister, President of RSUA from 1989-1991, passed away at the end of November at the age of 91. Billy was a one of Northern Ireland’s leading architects who was renowned for his dynamism and his wide range of talents.

During his career Billy led a number of well known projects including Belfast Central Station and Aldergrove Airport. Indeed the architecture of aviation became a speciality of his practice with commissions for airports across the UK.

Later in his career Billy shifted his focus to environmental impact assessments and accessibility standards. His expertise in these areas resulted in a Professorship from the University of Ulster. Professor McAlister was the founder and senior lecturer at the Centre for Accessibility at the University.

Billy’s leading status in the world of architecture on these islands was recognised by the profession when he was made a fellow of both RIBA and RIAI.

Many RSUA members have fond memories of Billy and he will be sadly missed.
