DAERA envisages RSUA role in enhancing biodiversity

14/04/2025

In December 2024, RSUA met with with the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), Andrew Muir, to discuss a range of issues affecting architecture in Northern Ireland.

You can read more about this meeting here.

One of the topics discussed was the concept of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), an approach to development that ensures a measurable positive impact on biodiversity, leaving nature in a better state than it was before.

In an update last month, Minister Muir informed us that BNG is being proposed as one of the key work programs in the draft Nature Recovery Strategy, which DAERA intends to bring forward for public consultation later this year.

He noted that, should BNG be progressed, the involvement of key stakeholders – including RSUA – will be essential in helping to develop a model that is practical and suitable for integration into the planning process in Northern Ireland.
