Architect-led tour of Shankill Shared Women’s Centre

4 November 2024

On Friday afternoon, a group of RSUA members received a tour of the recently completed Shankill Shared Women’s Centre on Mayo Link.

The tour was organised by the Early Career Architects Forum and was delivered by Peter Moran and Bobby Moore from TODD Architects and Chief Executive Officer of Shankill Shared Women’s Centre Betty Carlisle.

Designed by TODD Architects, the purpose-built Shankill Shared Women’s Centre offers a versatile space for women from all communities in one of the most disadvantaged interface areas of Belfast. Described as ‘a space to grow’ the centre includes education and training rooms, well-being facilities, a café and an exhibition area. Childcare provision and support were major elements of the design brief, and the centre offers a nursery wing, bright after-school spaces and a multi-sensory room for children with specific needs.

The building was designed to BREEAM specifications around a central external courtyard and for the most part is a two-storey structure, with a three storey ‘tower’ strategically positioned to act as a beacon and to announce the main entrance. The project was completed in June 2024.
