Education Minister Michelle McIlveen has confirmed that £800m has been earmarked for twenty-right new post-primary school buildings across Northern Ireland.
The Minister also commented, however, that the these projects would be subject to funding still being available in the future and that the schools would not be built “until the end of this decade at the earliest”.
Of the seventy-five new schools approved over the past decade in Northern Ireland, only thirty have actually been completed. However, the twenty-eight schools which have been given the green light can now appoint designers and seek planning permission for new buildings under the Department of Education’s (DE) major capital works programme.
“These schools will benefit from a capital investment in the region of £794m, with deliverability subject to the level of capital resources available to the department towards the end of this decade and into the next,” commented the Minister.
