‘Acropolis Now!’ regain their crown at annual quiz

14/03/24

The 7th annual Perfectly Proportioned Quiz of Architecture and Other Things took place at the Black Box in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter on Wednesday 13 March 2024. This year’s quiz questions were the responsibility of Queen’s University, Belfast. Alan Jones, Professor of Architecture took on the challenge and in coordination with RSUA created eight rounds of questions which covered a diverse range of topics, including music, film, local Grade A listed buildings, the Olympics, transport and culinary delights.

Not quite your typical table quiz, the Perfectly Proportioned Quiz of Architect and Other Things always involves some surprises and tasks to get the creative juices flowing! Added extras this year included a variety of spot prizes, a creative challenge which saw teams design and build a chair for an egg (more on that below) and even, taking a leaf out of the Squid Games TV series, a task that involved creating a star out of a ginger nut biscuit!

Twelve teams competed throughout the night but it was ‘Acropolis Now!’ and ‘Consarc 1’ battling it out right to the final round. In the end both teams tied on 73 points, however, RSUA Director Ciarán Fox was ready in the wings with a final task to decide who would take the ultimate victory. The teams were challenged with working out how to create a capital ‘T’ out of 4 unusually shaped pieces of wood. ‘Acropolis Now!’ came out on top, to be crowned the winner of the £200 Sterling Prize, which was provided by Ridgeway Online.

All funds raised from the quiz goes to support the Simon Community NI, this year attendees raised a record-breaking £581!

At the start of the night teams were introduced to this year’s creative challenge ‘Sit on me’. With there being many prominent architects that have turned their hand to designing chairs, our teams were tasked with using a wide variety of raw materials to design and build a unique chair. The more creative flare the better but one important element was that it must be able to hold the weight of a raw egg! All twelve teams stepped up to the challenge and produced a wide variety of designs. After a public vote, two teams came out victorious, winning a case of wine from Hays to share between them.
