This year, the RSUA/JP Corry Early Career Architects Design Competition, challenges Early Career Architects to propose creative ideas for the repurposing of a classic red phone box in the centre of Belfast.
As part of the BT ‘Adopt a Kiosk’ scheme, RSUA has registered to adopt a telephone kiosk on North Street at the junction with Waring Street.
The original phone box design was itself the result of a competition which was won by architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, in 1924. The K2 kiosk was the first version of the red phone box. The version in Belfast is the K6.
The competition aims to:
- Generate debate, interest and discussion on the future uses of public phone boxes of all types as they increasingly fall out of use
- Explore what role mini design competitions can play in delivering imaginative small projects which enrich the urban environment
- Give new life to a small piece of our built heritage
- Unleash and showcase the creative talents of early-career architects from Northern Ireland
The project is small and the time is tight – the deadline for submissions is 16 October 2023 but please do register immediately by emailing Kerry Campbell on Kerry@rsua.org.uk.
An overview of the competition, including eligibility to participate, can be viewed here.
