RSUA Advanced Conservation Course

This spring RSUA is running a 5-day Advanced Conservation Course which can lead to an RSUA Certificate in Architectural Conservation on successful completion of an assessment.

The programme is aimed at architects and related professionals working in the fields of conservation, refurbishment and restoration who have previously completed the RSUA Conservation Course or equivalent. The introductory RSUA Conservation Course will be run again in autumn 2019.

This course is not directly connected to the process of becoming a RIBA accredited Conservation Architect however it is a useful addition to your portfolio of evidence if you are working toward that goal.

The achievement of an RSUA Certificate in Architectural Conservation is an essential preparatory step for architects wishing to undertake an RSUA Diploma in Architectural Conservation which is a non-class based project.

The course will be co-ordinated by Marcus Patton and the speakers will be a mix of local and national experts.  The indicative topics are:

Module 1: Use and Adaptation

– Issues arising from change of use
– Restoration projects
– The most sustainable building is…
– Dampness

Module 2: Defects
Day 2 – 21st March
– Dry and wet rot
– Thatch and vernacular buildings
– Disabled access
– Fire safety in historic buildings

Module 3: Specialist Work
Day 3 – 28th March
– Lime and pointing
– Window repair and Blacksmith work
– Historic building legislation
– Archaeology

Module 4: Site Visits
Day 4 – 4th April
– Site visit

Module 5: Sustainability
Day 5 – 18th April
– Maintenance and Asset Management
– Case History
– Assessing significance
– Intervention and pastiche
– Presentation of Certificates
