The term ‘lean construction’ is an adaptation of lean production techniques applied to the construction industry. Very broadly it can be characterised as techniques aimed at maximising value and minimising waste.

There is a long-established narrative whereby the construction sector in the UK is seen to perform in a way that is thought to be wasteful compared to other industries. The underlying argument is that it does not deliver good value for its customers. In part this is due to the unusual nature of construction, where, unlike a production line, each building is a one off. This seminar, developed by DesignID provides an insight into the benefits of designing in a lean manner.

Stephen Smalley is Regional Director at DesignID and has extensive experience in the construction industry as a structural and civil engineer, including many traditional and modern methods of construction including steel frame, concrete, timber and load bearing masonry design.  Stephen has led the engineering on notable large and smaller scale commercial, education, industrial and high-rise developments in the UK and overseas. Stephen has designed with ‘zero-carbon’ materials, considering both the embodied and sequestered carbon. Stephen is also guest tutor at Queens University Belfast, and the University of Ulster School of Planning.
