Is anyone watching the quality?

Is anyone watching the quality?

The Northern Ireland Construction Group, which brings together the leading trade and professional bodies in the region, has organised a talk of industry-wide significance to address major issues of building quality that have come to light in recent months.

The hard hitting talk “Is anyone watching the quality?” will focus on the findings from the Independent Inquiry into the Construction of Edinburgh Schools which was established after the collapse of a wall at Oxgangs Primary School and the subsequent closure of 17 schools. The talk will be delivered by Northern Irish architect John Cole who led the inquiry.

Whilst the collapse of the wall was the starting point, it has emerged since then that the problems were much wider, were repeated in projects across Scotland and that it was highly likely that they were not isolated to Scotland. John’s talk will show how the report’s findings have identified some current trends and practices in the regulation, the structural organisation, procurement, design, management, supervision and inspection of construction projects that are potentially having a very negative impact on the quality and safety of buildings being delivered by the construction industry.

Professor John Cole CBE

John Cole, architect and past-president of RSUA, is currently a council member of the RIBA and is its nominated Procurement Champion. John is also currently a member of the RIBA’s Expert Advisory Group on the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
