Designing “Zero Carbon” housing – learnings from Killynure Green

In the context of a climate emergency and growing overall awareness of the total environmental cost of development, the energy performance of housing has perhaps never been more crucial. Killynure Green, developed by Choice Housing, is an award winning project in Carryduff which was the first housing scheme in Northern Ireland to achieve Level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and is one of the largest schemes of this type in the UK.

Course content

This session will cover the key challenges, learnings, and opportunities of this award-winning project and addresses the questions:

·      How do we build new homes that are easy to maintain and easy for occupants to live in?

·      How do we reduce the performance gap?

·      What does the future direction of new homes look like and what challenges will it bring?

Brian Rankin leads the energy management team in Choice Housing. In 2018 he completed his MSc in Energy Management and Renewable Energy, with his dissertation examining new build energy standards. Brian has a BA Hons in Business Studies and has gained experience across a number of areas of energy management such as energy efficiency, renewable technologies, energy procurement, environmental management, passive house design and heat networks.
