Delivering low cost, low-risk, long-life sustainable buildings using concrete and masonry

This workshop from The Concrete Centre and the Modern Masonry Alliance, supported by QPANI, The Concrete Society and the RSUA, will provide the latest guidance on the design and delivery of long-lasting, resilient buildings. Practical guidance will also be given on broader sustainability issues relating to the use and specification of concrete and masonry.
The workshop will provide delegates with:
• Updates on the latest initiatives to influence future new build housing.
• Guidance on design considerations that impact resilient design.
• Practical information on specifying concrete sustainably and the influence of the circular economy on design.

The speakers are:
Elaine Toogood, Senior Architect, The Concrete Centre
Elaine is senior architect at The Concrete Centre and provides decision-makers in the construction industry with advice and design guidance related to the use of concrete and masonry. As well as providing project advice, Elaine also contributes to Concrete Quarterly, authors technical guidance and is responsible for curating numerous events and lectures. Elaine has nearly 20 years’ experience of working in the construction industry, principally as an architect within private practice and is a long serving member of the Lewisham Planning Authority Design Panel. She was a contributor to the DEFRA Property Flood Resilience Action Plan.
Andrew Minson, Executive Director, The Concrete Centre & British Precast
Andrew is Executive Director at MPA responsible for The Concrete Centre, British Precast and Modern Masonry Alliance. He currently is chair of the IStructE Design Practice committee and is responsible for the concrete industry Sustainability Strategy. He joined The Concrete Centre in 2004 following 10 years with Arup in building engineering where he worked in multi-disciplinary teams developing integrated solutions. Andrew is co-author of the Wiley publication Sustainable Concrete Solutions, published in 2014.
