City Zeitgeist : RSUA Study Trip to Hamburg – June 2019

RSUA organised a Study Trip to Germany’s second city Hamburg in June 2019.  The trip took the theme of “Schiffe und Ziegel” or ships and bricks and Hamburg’s status as a port city which is redolent of Belfast.  Hamburg’s urban planning has dealt with and built upon the scars left after the industrial revolution.

Hamburg have delegated land on the new HafenCity development and have used it as a catalyst to steer the city and provide places for people to live (7000 new affordable homes), study (schools and university), work (new office spaces and media hubs) and visit the city (tourism boost- elbphilharmonie), in a model which could inform development in Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Over forty architects, public policy makers, contractors and clients attended the Study Trip, which comprised of visits to architectural practices, tours of noteworthy buildings and presentations from people involved in the regeneration of Germany’s second largest city, and was kindly supported by Gerberit and Tarkett.
