Understanding Craft Skills

RSUA and Historic Environment Division (HED) of the Department of Communities invite you to attend ‘Understanding Craft Skills’, a one-day conservation CPD course at the HED Conservation Works depot in Moira.

The Conservation Works team members based here are stonemasons, blacksmiths and conservation joiners who maintain and conserve the heritage assets under the Department’s control across Northern Ireland. Moira depot is also home to the Heritage Skills Centre where HED train and upskill new and existing craftspeople in heritage skills to benefit assets in the Department’s care as well as the wider heritage sector.

This session will be a mix of talks, discussions and hands on experiences run by the HED restoration team, led by the depot manager Alistair Payne and supported by HED Architect Dermot McRandal.

It will provide a practical look at what conservation skills are available, how to specify them and how to ensure they are applied to your project.

Topics covered will include:

  • – Use of lime in masonry
  • – Repair of historic joinery
  • – Blacksmithing
  • – The All-Island heritage skills programme
