RSUA Conservation Course October 2024

From 17th October – 21st November 2024

The RSUA is running a 5 day course in Historic Building Conservation aimed at architects and related professionals working in the fields of conservation, refurbishment and restoration. This course is designed to meet the formal accreditation criteria for the Conservation Registrant (CR) level of the RIBA Conservation Register but will be of equal benefit to technologists, planners and surveyors involved in conservation work.

It is understood that Historic Environment Division – Department for Communities (HED) are moving towards a requirement for formal accreditation as a condition of historic building grant aid.  The National Lottery Heritage Fund also recommends that conservation-accredited professionals are employed on schemes involving historic buildings

The course programme is based on the ICOMOS Education and Training Guidelines and the format of the www.understandingconservation.org training website which has been agreed across a wide range of professional and statutory bodies.  Full details of the RIBA Accreditation Scheme can be found on the RIBA website.

Accreditation is a way of demonstrating your understanding of and competence in built heritage conservation, increasingly being looked for by clients, grant funders and statutory bodies and this course is intended to support you starting the accreditation journey as well as delivering sound advice for good conservation practice.  Sensitive and appropriate conservation-led retrofit to improve thermal efficiency and adapt historic buildings for climate change is now a core part of the course content.

The course will be co-ordinated by Marcus Patton and Dawson Stelfox and speakers will be a mix of local and national experts. This is an intensive course of lectures maintaining the high reputation that the previous RSUA courses have held. Please note the course will include a written essay requirement.
