IHBC NI – Retrofit for the Future

The UK and Ireland has committed to net zero by 2050. Traditional, built heritage or just plain older buildings present amazing opportunities to reduce energy use and taking advantage of the existing embodied carbon. The challenges of retrofit are many, including protecting the external integrity & the historic fabric / traditional construction from inappropriate or un-informed intervention or ‘improvements’. Our 3 speakers will share their experiences as they have wrestled with this subject.

Professor John Edwards is a practitioner and educator with over thirty years’ experience and has been responsible for the refurbishment and retrofit of thousands of buildings ranging from social housing to grade 1 listed buildings and Scheduled Monuments. As an industry expert he is a member of the BSI Retrofit Standards Task Group and has contributed to the development of standards and guidance on the energy efficiency of buildings including British and European Standards and PAS 2030 PAS 2035 and PAS 2038 along with National Occupational Standards for Construction Site Management Retrofit. A Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Construction Manager, trained energy assessor and qualified educator and competency assessor. A Director of Edwards Hart Consultants and in his professor on practice role at the University of Wales Trinity St David, he leads on retrofit activities at the Construction Wales Innovation Centre. He is formerly Assistant Director of Cadw and previously worked for English Heritage and is Chair of the IHBC Technical Panel.

• Guidance and Standards including the IHBC Toolbox

• EPC’s• Retrofit assessment – the correct approach

• Fabric retrofit and building services and technologies -working together

• Design – materials and detailing

• Using decision making tools

‘Retrofit fundamentals for Vernacular Houses’

Chris is a Chartered Building Surveyor working exclusively with historic listed and unlisted buildings, structures and landscapes. He holds post graduate qualifications in Building Conservation, is a member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and is accredited in Building Conservation by the RICS. His work with historic buildings has been recognised on a local, national and European level. He is motivated by his enthusiasm for the buildings and people he works with and by sharing his passion with like-minded clients, contractors and tradesmen.

Stephen Douglas BSc (Hons), Dip Arch. RIBA RSUA RIAI

‘Non domestic buildings, including Primark Bank Buildings & The Majestic’

Stephen Douglas is an RIBA accredited Specialist Conservation Architect who has worked in NI with Hall Black Douglas for over 30 years. His interest in re using historic buildings started in his student days, winning the RIBA Dissertation Prize for his work on the re use of redundant churches. Over his career, Stephen has worked on a number of award winning projects including the Verbal Arts Centre, Derry, the Linen Hall Library Millennium project, the Tropical Ravine restoration and St Comgall’s Community Hub, Belfast. Most recently he was in charge of the conservation side of the Bank Buildings Primark rebuild after the catastrophic fire in 2018.
