66 Practices commit to Fair Pay for Part 1 Graduates
12/12/2019
To attract and retain talent it is essential that architecture is a career where each individual is valued and where everyone’s talent and effort is rewarded fairly. RSUA believes that fair reward should be in place from day one of a graduate’s employment. We also believe that practices should have the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their commitment to the next generation of architects and that students should be able to make informed decisions as to where to seek employment based on this.
RSUA believes it is very damaging to the sustainability of the profession of architecture when practices seek to minimise their cost base and undercut their competition by paying Part 1 Graduates less than the UK Living Wage.
RSUA has therefore developed Commitments to Fair Pay for Part 1 Graduates which sets some minimum standards and RSUA is pleased to report that 66 practices are now signed up. The headline commitment is to pay a minimum of the UK Living Wage as set by the Living Wage Foundation which recently increased from £9 per hour to £9.30 an hour.
This week, we informed our 300 student members of the new list of employers who are signed up to the commitments.

Honouring commitments
These commitments are only of any value if they are honoured by all organisations that sign up to them. If you are a Fair Pay organisation, please ensure that you are meeting the commitments. Whilst the commitments are made voluntarily, having publicly made them, any breach of the commitments could be considered a breach of Standard 1 of the ARB Architects Code of Conduct. If you are aware of a Fair Pay employer failing to honour the commitments please report this directly to Ciarán Fox, confidentially, on ciaran@rsua.org.uk or 028 9032 3760.
